Qatar has already come a long way in its recent development. An important goal: To complement the strong oil and gas industry by diversifying into other economic pillars. In addition to downstream petrochemical industries, the focus is also on the service sector.
Infrastructure and technology are being driven forward at full speed as well, including the Internet of Things (IoT), smart cities and autonomous driving. In doing so, the Arabian Gulf emirate aims to develop into a knowledge-based society. This also requires the establishment of national and international security standards regarding information technology. How TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH (TÜViT) can contribute to this as a lab has been the subject of many discussions with the Cyber Security Affairs Sector at the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MoTC) for some time.
Since then, the testing service provider from Essen, Germany, has successfully undergone a recognition process. It has become official: TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH has received the license as an evaluation body in the Qatar Common Criteria Scheme (QCCS). Licensing aims to test security and ICT products for their security functionality, thereby raising IT security standards in the region at the same time.
For the time being, the evaluations are still being carried out at national level. "The recognition of our evaluation body is nevertheless a big step for Qatar," emphasizes Hans-Werner Blißenbach, director of the evaluation body for IT security at TÜV Informationstechnik GmbH. "After all, this is an important building block for the certification body in achieving the status of a Certificate Authorising Nation according to the Common Criteria Recognition Arrangement (CCRA)," Blißenbach continues.
